About the Event
As early as 1750, shortly after the first houses were built in Halifax, a group of Brethren, led by Governor Cornwallis, gathered and believed that it was important for Masonry to be spread in the Province. They felt it was necessary to support its growth in this location.
At that time, Erasmus James Phillips, Esquire, from Annapolis Royal, held the position of Provincial Grand Master. They decided to request a warrant from him to establish a Lodge in Halifax, with His Excellency as the master. The warrant was granted on July 19th, and on the same day, Lord Colville and several Navy Gentlemen were initiated as Apprentices in the Lodge. Many prominent residents and officials of the Province also became members.
During his time in the Province, Governor Cornwallis served as the Master of this Lodge, overseeing it through a Deputy, following the Scottish tradition. He was later succeeded by…
